Ulaanbaatar,Capital city of Mongolia,was not always called Ulaanbaatar

Ulaanbaatar, which is also called as Ulan-bator, is the capital city of Mongolia. I am sure you knew that, but did you know that the name of the city was not always same and as well as it has changed its location 29 times in its history related with Mongolia’s specific nomadic migration?

Before settling in on the name Ulaanbaatar which means Red Hero, the city had series names : Urga(Urgoo) 1639-1706, Ikh Khuree 1706-1911, Niislel Khuree 1911-1924 and in November 1924, the name Ulaanbaatar was given to the city. 

Founded as movable monastery in 1639

The city of Ulaanbaatar was first established as movable monastery when first Jivzundamba Khutugtu, G.Zanabazar was declared as spritual leader of Khalkh Mongols by convocation of nobles in the year of 1639. This year, 2019, is the honorary 380th anniversary of Ulaanbaatar city. 

Ulaanbaatar city is the larger than 96 countries in the world

The territory of Ulaanbaatar is larger than 96 countries in the world such as Luxemburg, Monaco, and Singapore. The total land area is 1,816 square miles 4,704 square km and that’s nearly 5 times the size of Greater Manchester.

There is no doubt, UB is youth's city. Because, Ulaanbaatar is one of 100 cities with the youngest population, with about 63 % of its residents are younger than 35-year-olds.

Ulaanbaatar, shortly UB is surrounded by 4 sacred mountains as Bayanzurkh, Bogd Khan, Songinokhairkhan and Chilgeltei in 4 sides. Moreover, south of Ulaanbaatar , Bogd Khan Mountain is proclaimed as sacred and protected area in 1783 which made it the oldest national park in the world and It predates the Yellowstone by approximately 100 years.
